With Me or Against Me

We live in a binary world. We worry that technology is taking over, but that isn’t my real worry. It is simply that every thought, every opinion seems to be a 1 or a 0. You’re with me or against me. You don’t agree with me? Then you must agree with my enemy. You must be my enemy. There must be something more, something more elastic, some movement of thought.

Does anyone even change their opinion anymore? Hear an argument and think, actually??? Maybe… They could be right!

We shouldn’t blame technology for this. We choose the tools, our information sources and the platforms to spread  our thoughts. We decide if instant gratification, an instant hit is what we need. We can’t fool ourselves that there is no time for more, there is, we just have to use it better. And think.

Information Overload

You can never have too much information, right? Information means education, that’s knowledge, right? But, currently it seems it is possible to have too much information. Because, after all, information does not have to be true. It is just a message, it is up to us to decide if we trust the messenger. Politicians stand up and lie, repeatedly, and go unchallenged. People share what they have heard, and the word is spread.

But, how do we know? After all, we can’t all be experts in every field. We have to think, look at where the information has come from. If you live in America, and the website you are reading is covered in patriotic memorabilia, you can be pretty sure there will be a bias to a certain point of view. Maybe you share many of those views, but you should still be aware of the bias and not just let your views be confirmed. I feel that the liberal media is much more honest, but I still have to think about what I hear and not blindly accept it.

We all must be aware that every person has some individual bias. After all, we are all products of our environments, we all want to believe that our peers and our friends are good, honest people. And they probably are, but it doesn’t mean they are right.

Black and White

Almost every news, or information, item that appears on my facebook feed has no meaning. Pictures of a few maniacs used to justify hatred of an entire group. Images of a sick child with the suggestion to share or like to send a prayer, and if you don’t you must be a monster. Being asked to like something to show your support, and told you are a coward if you don’t.

The problem is that nothing is black and white. All police officers are not good, most are and do an unenviable job. All muslims are not terrorists, some are and need to be stopped. And if you want to help a sick child then make a donation, or do something concrete.

So, everyone, please stop posting this polarising nonsense. It has no purpose, it is too simplistic and it is divisive. And that is the last thing we all need.
